Hurricane Katrina Video Project
With an estimated $35 billion – or more – in insured losses caused by Hurricane Katrina, it is clear that insurance will play a substantial role in the rebuilding of the devastated Gulf Coast region. As part of its commitment to public service, Gilbert Randolph has produced two videos to help those affected better understand common insurance coverage issues, and to provide practical pointers for maximizing insurance recovery for this and future disasters.
The first video is aimed at homeowners and goes over some basics of insurance coverage, including
- Tips for documenting a claim for insurance proceeds
- What’s covered by the standard homeowners policy, with an emphasis on hurricane-specific issues such as wind, flood, and mold
- How to be better prepared for future disasters
The second video is aimed at small business owners and provides an overview of common coverage issues for small businesses, including provisions included in typical business insurance policies, such as
- Extra expense
- Business interruption
- Extended and contingent business interruption
(This video assumes some familiarity with basic insurance coverage issues, so some viewers may want to start with the homeowner video.)
These documents provide information cited in the videos, and include helpful checklists for insurance policyholders:
